Transforming over 300 acres of desert into a thriving forest as a "software guy" seems impossible. Even the optimists admit that this task is extremely challenging.
For those new here, turning 320 acres into a forest might seem impossible, and to some extent, I agree. I'm not trying to green the entire property right away. I'm...

Watching this reminds me of the Peace Corps during the Vietnam conflict. During that time, you had a very uneducated workforce filled with Draft Dodgers. You want your well running all the time to bring in fresh water. If you have any organic material growing in the formation of water source, you can possibly have H2s .you see it in production equipment, not just in the oil and gas industry, so sticking your head over tank and breathing in is not recommended. Pipe wrenches 3/8" chain the parachute cord you used is 550 cord its rated to 550 foot pounds. Dress appropriately for the task at hand sandals are not appropriate for task

i am not in he impossible camp, but i read an article by Neal Spackan of the Al Beyda project where he essentially said that extending an edge is a lot easier than popping an oasis up out of nowhere, so you bringing in water and organic matter is essentially you extending the edge, and the acreage you're working on will help your porject become more self sustaining once it hits that level

Any river that is incised down from the floodplain runs through a desert… the Tigres, Euphrates …so you need baffles of rocks across the river, rock weirs effectively (beavers achieve the same thing) Uphill silt fills it up eventually connecting to the floodplain. Once the hydrology is reinstated, grass trees grow well and it’s a drought proof floodplain

Hey question, Is that windmill in anyway salvageable? If so you should right and repair it, get a mechanical pump and attach. take your electric pump to the other well head and let mother nature pump the first well get a nice big tank and put on some posts and leave it there.

Take a 1/2” plate of steel. Bore a hole that is 1/4 - 1/2“ larger in diameter than the outside diameter of what you want to lift. Bore another hole on the other end of the plate so the Jack can grab it. Slide the plate over the top and when you use the Jack it will bind on the tube and you will be able to simply Jack it up. It works wonders when pulling fence posts out of the ground with minimal equipment.

I have employed this method in different areas around the world and it absolutely does NOT work as well in arrived desert climates lacking shade. The thermally heated ground of the desert does not cool down sufficiently to create a cooling effect in the Sonoran Desert. I only get a 15 degree improvement and that is not enough to be life saving...and that is in a space created with 2 foot thick strawbale and only 100 sq ft.

I think one of the issues is, people think they can just go out and pitch a tent and plant trees and shrubs and everything will just magically happen... A project like yours is a TON of work and a lot of time and equipment, otherwise it would take 50 years or more, just to get something established. The equipment is vital to the speed and longevity of the project. Also, making an entertaining channel and doing all the work of writing, filming and editing, is a real pain in the butt, it's basically a full-time job, on top of all the other jobs that you're already doing.

All progress is great progress on a project of this magnitude. Small experiment, perhaps pick a spot where you have greenery. Use a yard stick etc to markout a circle, draw back the soil to make a shallow cone. Using an auger put a hole on the centre depended on the auger length and pack with chipped wood straw etc. When the rain comes hopefully you can get water under the surface and retained in the ground. Would be interesting to compare to an adjacent spot untouched. 🙏❤️

@@gardenersgraziers7261 I live in a very different environment but something fast growing that flings out a wide leafy canopy. To extend the wet season I would pick a level area below a slope and and place interconnected IBC's above that can be filled from a convenient location and use those to drip feed the cones. If taking the above approach I would even consider non native fast growing species interspersed with those species I wanted long term, considering the non natives sacrificial for chipping and mulching after a few years once the ground cover and natives were established. I am curious as to what trees bushes you would suggest using the above approach? 🙏❤️

Looks like you kind of know what your doing... Here's a tip that I saw the Saudi, USEING to turn a desert sand dunes into forests. They had no water. They, have designed a tree, that needs, little to no water. They, plant them at four feet tall, very quickly with heavy equipment. Miles and Miles of them. If u find out who, grows those trees too 4 feet for them. You save, 10 years. I was a expert at mass growing of trees in the 70s, me and my Vietnam buddy's, spliced, 48.000 banana trees, from five grown trees. WE did it in Ohio.. when our banana trees were four feet tall. Coasta Rica government, gave us, large track of land. WE planted all 48.000 banana trees, and founded Dole Bananas. Then with the profit, I bought 5 million square miles of land in south and central America, and planted every known fruit tree on earth. And founded, Dole frozen fruit juice concentrated , the ones in the can you add water to. .. good luck, u do know, there is a cotton, fiber like, sail cloth, you hang it up, on high ridges, like a fence, the mess, catches, water, dew, droplets, in the early am, the water, drains to a catch hose, u then brought it to a tank.. u might want to read up of those things.

Do you have an estimate for the cost per unit length to build swales like the Tucson swales? They have held up for like a century without maintenance, and with heavy machinery, I bet the cost is relatively low and faster than when they dug them by shovel. There's a lot of private philanthropist money you could fundraise for something like that, and lots of individuals like myself would be happy to chip in for that

does attracting certain wildlife help the soils and spreading of seeds. like birds for example. creating habitats for small wildlife and insects. aside from cattle and other barn animals. aren't swales the best way to catch rainwater and keep it in the ground? i had plants go from seed to fruit with just light rain using a swale. it did take soaking it initially though. but like those guys who brought all that organic material on their trip like the branches and stuff. what if you dug out little areas and buried little loads like that every now and then? does anyone know if that would be worth the effort? if you collected dead plant material around the property every now and then to bury and also build large compost piles, and in ground compost piles.
